Green School Committee 2023 - 2024

St. Garvan’s N.S has been working hard over the years and have succeeded in being awarded 6 Green School Flags by An Taisce, covering the themes of Litter and Waste, Energy, Water, Travel, Biodiversity and Global Citizenship: Litter and Waste.

We are now working towards our 7th flag, with the theme being Global Citizenship – Energy. This maintenance theme gives schools a chance to revise the Energy theme while looking at issues surrounding energy on a global scale.

Our current committee have been working hard towards raising awareness about the benefits of saving energy, and encouraging everybody to follow our slogan ‘Play it Right, Turn off the Light’. They completed an energy audit in school to check how much energy our school is using. They then came up with wonderful ideas about how we can save energy at home and at school, including: ensuring all lights, computers etc. are turned off when not in use, turning down the thermostat on the heating system, using our washing machine on a lower degree cycle.

Last year, our school collected a total of 12 boxes of batteries, each containing 5 kilograms, for the WEEE Ireland Schools Battery Recycling Competition. The committee are now working on organising an Action Day related to the theme of energy.

The committee have also been busy planting fruit and vegetables in our wooden planter boxes outside the court. They sowed carrots, parsnips, lettuce, strawberries and pumpkins, and watered and weeded them regularly. The whole school got to taste the fruits (and vegetables!) of their labour whilst sampling some of the lovely home grown produce.

Keep an eye on our Green Schools noticeboard for further updates on fun competitions we have planned, and on how we will keep working towards making our school and global community a cleaner, greener place for all.
