Sports & Games

SGNS prides itself on a varied and active student body. Have you got an interest in a sport that is not listed ? Or have you an idea how to develop a particular sport further? Speak to the school about developing a programme.

GAA

LINKING SCHOOL, HOME & CLUB

SGNS has a long standing history with Gaelic Games over the years. We have a great working partnership with our local Taghmon Camross GAA. Each week, the Games Promotion Officer (GPO) for the club comes to the school to teach skills to the students. The focus is on GAA for all, an inclusive game, for every student regardless of ability or club membership, where fun and games are at the core of all sessions.

We are also very lucky to have an active parent body who have instigated GAA coaching sessions weekly, before school, at 8:15am. This is open to both boys and girls and has proved a very successful affair. SGNS thanks the parents and teachers who volunteer their time to run this initiative.

Football

We have entered the Rackard League Boys and Girls Football competitions for many years.  We have won these competitions on numerous occasions, but we put emphasis on taking part and developing skills, often joining up forces with St. Fintan's NS, Taghmon. When we have large numbers of pupils wishing to participate, we enter two teams, give all pupils a chance to play.  We also enter the Mini Sevens in both boys and girls football every year.

Hurling & Camogie

We participate in the Rackard League Hurling and Camogie competitions along with the Mini-Sevens in both these codes. Again, we often join up with St. Fintan's NS, Taghmon to field teams.

We have won various Rackard League competitions over the years and indeed the current Taghmon-Camross hurling team is backboned by players from successful Rackard League teams.

SGNS is very lucky to have talented staff, who give up their time before school, during lunchtimes and after school to manage and train the teams. Without their enthusiasm and dedication, the competitions would not be entered.

Rounders

SGNS has a strong history of rounders. Although we play at a competitive level, we focus on inclusion and wellbeing. Predominately, the senior classes participate and everybody who wishes to take an active role on the team can do so, regardless of ability. The focus on fun continues with the annual Teachers  vs . Sixth Class rounders match in June.

Parental Involvement

The development of GAA skills and promotion of the GAA as a game for all, would not happen without the active parent body who support the children. We are also very lucky to have such an active parent body who have instigated GAA coaching sessions weekly, before school, at 8:15am. This is open to both boys and girls and has proved a very successful affair. SGNS thanks the parents and teachers who volunteer their time to run this initiative.

Athletics

Each year we take part in the Athletics competition in Enniscorthy Sports Hub. Although many of our students are members of Taghmon Athletics Club, a great facility to have in our area, alot of the competitiors, who make it through the preliminary rounds toEnniscorthy, are new to athletics, making it an accessible sport for all. Pictured above are some of the May 2023 atheletes.

Tag Rugby

As our student's sporting interests are wide and varied, so too are the diverse learning opportunities that we offer.  Tag Rugby is a seasonal programme run by Leinster Rugby coaches. It's a fun, inclusive game for all students. The Tag programme teaches children the basics of Tag Rugby through fun games. Again this programme is aimed at all students regardless of ability or prior rugby knowledge.

Gymnastics

Gymnastics is an integral part of the Physical Education curriculum. We have a large General Purpose room with plenty of room for the gymnastic equipment and lessons. All our teachers are trained to lead gymastics lessons throughout the year, but we also offer termly gymnastic sessions with designated instructors from local gymnastic clubs.

Swimming

SGNS goes on an annual trip to the Apex Swimming Pool in New Ross for a term of swimming lessons for the children in our middle classes. Aquatics is an integral part of the Physical Education programme, and we are delighted to be in a position to offer our students swimming lessons. The children are streamed into 3 / 4 groups, depending on their swimming ability.  This is to ensure that there is progress for every child at every level.

Rock Paper Scissors

The 2023 whole school Rock Paper Scissors Tournament was a resounding success, so much so that it will become an annual event. As our school holds inclusivity at its core, this sporting tournament is the embodiment of inclusivity. RPS fever sweeps the school in June. Who will be crowned next year's champion?

     School      Tours

Our annual school tours are another source of varied sporting  outings for the students. We love to offer new learning experiences with watersports, orienteering,  Zorbing,  abseiling, archery, caving to name but a few recent activities!

Physical Education

The Physical Education (PE) is for children from Junior Infants to Sixth Class. The curriculum contributes to children’s overall development by helping them to lead full, active and healthy lives.

The PE curriculum provides a balanced range of activities for children through the six strands:

•Athletics

•Dance

•Gymnastics

•Games

•Outdoor and adventure activities

•Aquatics.

The current curriculum was introduced as part of the 1999 Primary School Curriculum, but this is currently under review and the new curriculum will reflect current practices in SGNS, where PE and Wellbeing go hand in hand.

Playground Leaders

The Playground Leaders programme has proven to be a very successful sports programme which is run by Sports Active Wexford.

The key objective is inclusiveness. This programme supports students in making the playground a fun and safe place for absolutely everyone. We want to create an atmosphere outside of the classroom where everyone can interact with each other, explore, imagine, and play together no matter what the age, ability or background. The idea of this programme is to provide the older children in the playground with the skills and confidence to become leaders in the playground.

The programme is run for 1 full day by a Sports Active development officer. The session will consist of education around leadership and the importance of inclusivity followed by practical coaching sessions. Leaders will also get an opportunity to deliver fun sessions with a selected younger class which generates a sense of empowerment and excitement about the program. Following on from this programme, SGNS organises a playground leader schedule where the playground leaders organise and implement fun games at break times with varied classes and age ranges.

Dance

We love to boogie in SGNS. From taking musical movement breaks in the class, to performing on stage, we dance through the days. Each year we are blessed to have external dance teacher Anne-Marie Cooney, from the Anne-Marie Cooney Stage School, come to SGNS to teach us choreographed dance to modern music. We also like to practise our traditional Irish steps during Seachtain na Gaeilge.

Active Week

SGNS flies our Active Schools Flag with pride. Awarded to the school a number of years ago for its focus on fun, inclusive activity, we have continued to embed its practises into our daily routine with active movement breaks, active fundraisers, A K a Day initiative, Yoga etc. alongside our other sporting initiatives. Our active year culminates each June with Active Week including our annual Sports Day where fun and frolics take over (plus the ice-cream van arrives!)
